Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

As community builders, we navigate unknown territories, foster connections with new members, and steer the ship toward growth. On this journey, we often encounter an adversary – imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome is characterized by self-doubt and the persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud. This can cast shadows on even the most accomplished community builders. These nagging doubts can undermine our confidence as we strive to create vibrant and inclusive spaces.

Recognize the Signs

  • Constant self-doubt: Second-guessing your decisions and fearing your achievements are mere luck.
  • Downplaying success: Minimizing accomplishments and attributing them to external factors rather than acknowledging your competence.
  • Fear of exposure: Worrying others will discover your perceived shortcomings, leading to feelings of inadequacy.

The Impact on Community Building

  • Reduced innovation: Hesitation and self-doubt to explore new ideas or take risks due to fear of failure.
  • Limited collaboration: Afraid to collaborate openly, interfering with the potential of diverse perspectives and creative solutions.
  • Strained leadership: Imposter syndrome will affect the confidence necessary for effective leadership, impacting decision-making and community direction.

Real-Life Experiences

Now, let’s go through a couple of successful community builders and leaders who have experienced imposter syndrome.

Sheryl Sandberg
– COO of Facebook and Author

In her book ‘Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead’ Sheryl revealed she faced imposter syndrome despite her successful career. She admitted she often felt like a fraud and feared being exposed as incompetent.

Despite her high-profile position, Sandberg's admission of imposter syndrome humanized her and resonated with many women in the workforce. It also sparked conversations about the phenomenon in corporate settings.

Howard Schultz
– Former CEO of Starbucks

Howard has spoken openly about his struggles with imposter syndrome. He admitted that even after building a global empire, he often felt he didn't deserve his success.

Schultz's frankness about his feelings of inadequacy, despite his achievements, has helped destigmatize this syndrome in the business world. It also encouraged others to seek help and support. In his book ‘
Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time’, he illustrates the principles that shaped Starbucks, sharing the wisdom he gained from his quest to make great coffee part of the American experience.

Michelle Obama
– Former First Lady of the United States

Michelle Obama has admitted feeling she wasn't good enough and feared being exposed as a fraud, despite her Ivy League education and successful career.

Obama's openness about her struggles with imposter syndrome resonates with many women, especially those in leadership roles. Her memoir, ‘
Becoming’ delves into her journey and the challenges she faced, including her feelings of self-doubt.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

  1. Self-Reflection: Acknowledge and reflect on your achievements. Record your successes, and revisit them during moments of self-doubt.

  2. Community Support: Build a support network within your community or connect with fellow community builders. Sharing experiences and seeking advice can provide valuable perspectives.

  3. Set Realistic Goals: Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable goals. Celebrate each achievement along the way, reinforcing your competence.

  4. Embrace Failure as Growth: View failure not as a reflection of your abilities but as an opportunity to learn and grow. Every setback is a step toward improvement!

  5. Seek Mentorship: Engage with mentors who can offer guidance and share their experiences with overcoming community-building challenges.

To create thriving and resilient communities, it’s essential to embrace our authentic selves and recognize our capabilities as community builders. We pave the way for personal growth, innovation, and impactful community building by addressing imposter syndrome head-on.

Remember, you’re not alone on this journey –  your community stands as a testament to your ability to lead and inspire!
